Escaping to the Perfect Mom Cave

A Mom Cave is a space in your home to get away from the daily stresses of running a household.

Mom Cave Design

Whether you’re the proud but admittedly harried mother of two small children under the age of five, and you haven’t slept in what feels like years, or you have a teenager (or three) under your roof causing you agitation, you’d love a place to “get away from it all” on a regular basis.

A Mom Cave is just what it sounds like — a space in your home to get away from the daily stresses of running a household. Much like a Man Cave, it is a private retreat just for you, where you can enjoy your own things, ordered and kept just the way you like them. When putting your Mom Cave together, here are some things to consider. Whether you opt for a Man-Cave-like den including a massage chair, wine fridge and game table, or you crave a beautiful, elegant space to use for crafts, sewing, reading or meditating, you set the tone.

Design and Appoint Your Space

You may already have some storage built into the room, but you may need to add more or get creative with your space, especially if you want to craft, scrapbook or complete 2,000 piece jigsaw puzzles. The last thing you want and need is to spend your “me time” picking up and sorting small items.

You could add touches, such as organic candles for aromatherapy or pictures or art that give you a warm, glowing feeling, as well as exercise equipment or a home gym. Should you add a TV and home entertainment system? This could be a double-edge sword. On the one hand, it would be nice to watch a movie (or play a video game) without fear of interruption for once. On the other hand, there is something to be said for limiting your own screen time (just like you try — and probably fail — to limit your kids’).

Find the Perfect Furniture

Many moms don t often get to enjoy the luxury of being comfortable because they’re too busy sharing their beds with toddlers or enduring Caillou marathons so they can get through the 50+ emails that have accumulated in their inboxes. Invest in furniture that liberates you, looks good, and feels comfortable. (Don’t worry, since this is your private space, odds are low that you’ll have to pick Cheerio crumbs out from the cushions… unless you’re munching on the 0’s yourself!)

Accessories & Special Requirements

Lighting has a strong influence on mood. Soft, calm lighting is important for times when you just want to relax and good task lighting is also needed for activities such as reading, getting dressed, using a computer, writing, etc….Dimmer switches and lamps are a flexible way to change ambiance within a bedroom. A chandelier can be more dramatic and sconces add interest as well as light.
